Physics 2140, Fall '95 Homework #9

(Issued Wed, Oct 25)

Due Wed, Nov 1

Reading: Boas Ch. 2 (but you can skip 2.6, 2.7)

Reminder: Second midterm exam is Tues, Oct 31 7:30 PM

(There is a separate exam info/study sheet)

1a) Boas 2.5.33 1b) 2.5.34

2a) 2.5.54 2b) 2.5.56

3a) 2.10.9

4a) 2.11.8 4b) 2.14.3 (But, give all values)

The above questions cover material which is all fair game for the exam. (and in fact those are all good review problems as well) I strongly suggest you try them before Monday 10/30, in case you have questions before the exam.

The following problem is optional, you do not need to turn it in, because it covers material which will not be on the second exam. However, in order not to get behind, I urge you to still do it. (It covers things we're doing in class 10/25 -10/30) If you can't get to it before the exam, be sure to try it immediately after the exam, say by Fri Nov. 3

Find the impedance, Z, of the circuit sketched below, which will be driven by a voltage source of frequency [[omega]]. Give Z in standard rectangular form. (R and L are in series, and C is in parallel with them). If Z is real, the circuit is in resonance. Find [[omega]] in terms of R,L, and C at resonance. What is the value of Z on resonance?
