Physics 2170, Spring '96 Homework #14

Issued Wed, Apr 24 Due Fri, May 3

Last homework, Heck Yeah!

Reminder: Final Exam, ECCR 0-30, Th May 9, 7:30-10:30 AM!

Required reading for this week: F+T Chapter 5.1-5.5, 11.1, 11.2

(Optional: Beiser 6.1-6.9)

1. F+T 5-4.

Also, discuss how your answers would change if the box was only "partly symmetric", that is, if a=b<c (with c quite close to a and b)

Compare, in an energy level sketch, the original and this new "partly symmetric" case, being as explicit as possible.

(i.e., indicate clearly which states are raised and/or lowered a bit, label the degeneracies of all states, label the quantum numbers of all the states, etc.)

For the next 3 problems, note that F+T are asking for "spherically symmetric wave functions", which means that there is no dependence on angular variables, i.e. there is no angular momentum (i.e. l=0).

2. F+T 5-6a

3. F+T 5-7a, and c

4. F+T 5-8

5 F+T 11-2, and also

c) From F+T table 11-2, the spherical harmonic function for l=2, m=0 is .

Since m=0,. what is ?

Show that indeed satisfies the differential equation

(with l=2, m=0.)
