Calendar for E&M II Fall 2011
Written homework was assigned on Wednesdays, due the following Wednesdays at the start of class.
Weekend Preflights (online homework) were made available on Friday afternoons, due the following MONDAY MORNING (at 10 AM).
Students were expected to complete the readings before the lecture.

For each lecture in the list below there is a link to the clicker data from that day, which includes a screenshot for each question and student responses. More detailed information on all of the clicker questions from lectures (and a few extras) can be found in the Clickers tab.
When appropriate, there are also links to PDF versions of handouts or slides for class activities used on that day. All of the FA11 class activities and source files can be downloaded in a single zipped file.

1. Full maxwell equations, and full equations in matter (with a brief review of D and H fields  but you should review Ch 4 and 6 yourself ahead of time to remember the basics of polarization, magnetization, D, and H) 2. More on equations in matter, and boundary conditions 3. Wrapping up Ch 7 (boundary conditions) today. We'll be moving into "conservation of energy ideas" (Ch 8).

Week 7: Oct 3  7 (1st exam Tue Oct 4, 7 PM!) 
8.2.1 We're not going through 8.2.2 in detail, but will focus on the ideas! (Ditto 8.2.3 and 8.2.4) So, read it, with an eye to understanding the big picture. 9.1.1 and 9.1.2 (Fri) (See Ch 8 lecture notes)

Read Griffiths 9.4.3 for Mon. (We will skip 9.5!) 
1. Frequency dependence, phase and group velocity. (Dispersion) 2. Continuing with dispersion, and "anomalous dispersion) 3. Wrap up Ch 9, then start on potentials, V and A. (And, "gauge" choices)

Week 12: Nov 7  11 
Read through 10.2.1. (You can skip p. 424 if you want) 
1. More on the potentials, finding E and B, and gauge choices. 2. "Retarded time" in the Lorentz gauge. 3. Wrap up retarded time and summarize other Ch 10 topics. Intro to EM Radiation

Week 13: Nov 14  18 
Read thru 11.1.3 for Mon. (We'll skip most of the rest of Ch 11, except for Eq 11.70 and some of the conceptual ideas in the rest of this chapter.) We'll get started on relativity Fri: 12.1.12 should be a review of Physics 3, but I'm guessing you'll want to "relearn" that! See the extra relativity review powerpoints (or, pdf version, if you don't have powerpoint)
