PHYSICS 1120 Exam Information
We trust every individual in this class to
understand and follow the CU honor code .
Please respect that trust! It's a
large class, and we realize there may be some temptations - we'll do our best
to make the class valuable and worthy of your honorable behaviour!
Detailed grade information from the course syllabus is available here.
Within a week after each midterm, we will upload what we have (exam, homeworks, etc) to the "my grades" feature on our CULearn page (http://culearn.colorado.edu ) So, those won't be exactly "live", but they will be updated about once a month throughout the term.
Final Exam:
- Exam solutions are posted on CULearn.
- Your grades have been computed - please go to CULearn and look at "My grades". We will submit these to CU within a few days.
- The average grade on the final was 66%, with a median of 67%. The distribution is shown here:
OLDER stuff:
Exam 1 results
- Exam #1 has been graded. You can find out your score by going to our CULearn web page and using the "My Grades" tool. Solutions have also been posted on the CULearn web page, please look there first if you have any questions about the exam.
- The class as a whole did extremely well, it's a very impressive distribution, nice work! We are very happy with the results. The average score was over 75%, and the median was over 78% (that means more than half the class got above 78% on the exam!) The standard deviation was 15%. Here is a histogram of exam scores
- The average on the multiple choice section alone was 13.9 out of 18 questions (which becomes 58 out of the 75 possible exam points from the multiple choice portion) Note that 75 out of the 100 points comes from multiple choice, and 25 comes from the "long answer" part.
- 25% of the class got total scores of 87 or higher, sweet! Congrats to all of you, that's a very strong performance. We don't assign letter grades to individual exams, only your total combined course score matters.
- On the other side, if you are unhappy with your score , don't panic. Please take a
look at my advice, comments, and suggestions . There is no universal answer, but we have lots of general
thoughts there that might help you turn things around. After reading
that, if you'd like to come see Prof. Pollock OR Gurarie, check out the

"TA's and office hours" link, or just email us! At this point in the semester, it gets progressively harder to have a big impact on your grade, but for sure there is still stuff to come - three or four more CAPAs, several more Tutorial Homeworks, 3 weeks of classes, the final exam (which counts a little more than the midterms) You can still positively impact your grade, but I will pretty much guarantee that "hoping" will not do it, nor will a vague sense that you'll promise yourself to try harder on the final - you need to be systematic and proactive, it will require considerable effort between now and the end of the term! (For example - how about talking with us and thinking about what you can do OVER T-giving break, rather than waiting until AFTER that week is gone!) The best time to plant a tree is 25 years ago. But the SECOND best time is today. Good luck, we're here to help!
