PRELAB QUESTIONS: (to be turned in upon arriving at lab)

1. Read the lab thoroughly.

2. Familiarize yourself with circuits and circuit diagrams (Giancoli, Chapters 18, 19).

3. For the circuits shown, rank the relative bulb brightness from brightest to dimmest. Assume all of the batteries and all of the light bulbs are identical. Note also that bulb brightness reflects the power dissipated in the bulb and that the bulb is a resistor. If you think that the brightness of two bulbs are equal, note f=g.

Ranking:

4. Describe why you have ranked the bulbs as you did. Present your reasoning in everyday language so that a friend who has never taken physics would understand your reasoning. (You can use words like voltage difference, current, energy etc., but no explicit formulas.)

5. In the diagrams from question 3, if each bulb has resistance of 10 Ω, what is the equivalent resistance of each combination? (A = left circuit, B = middle circuit, C = right circuit)

A: Ω

B: Ω

C: Ω

6. Which circuit diagram on the right best represents the resistors and power supply in the photograph on the left?

A B C D E

Thanks for your time and efforts!

Optional! - below is a space for any additional relevant comments, thoughts, or suggestions you have. If you want to elaborate on any "multiple choice" questions, do so here. It can also be about anything you'd like to tell or ask relating in some way to this class! If you expect a reply, however, it's much better to email your professors.

NOTE: This week, we suggest you print and bring in THIS page, since then you can see the pictures along with your answers.
