PRELAB QUESTIONS: (to be turned in upon arriving at lab)
Prelab on: Magnetism
1. Familiarize yourself with the introductory material on magnets (Giancoli, Chapter 20.1 through 20.3)
2. Read the lab thoroughly.
3. The metric (SI) unit of magnetic field is the Tesla. What is 1 Tesla in terms of the four basic SI units: meters, kg, seconds, and Coulombs? (Hint: you might use the by-now familiar formula for the force on a current carrying wire to deduce the answer.)
4. Describe briefly in the space below what you think magnetic field lines mean, what are they telling you, what information do they encode? In particular, we would like you to specifically discuss some ways in which magnetic field lines are "like" electric field lines, but also some ways that they are very different. (If you want to add a sketch to the paper you turn in to your TA for this question, that might be helpful. )
Thanks for your time and efforts! Optional! - below is a space for any additional relevant comments, thoughts, or suggestions you have. If you want to elaborate on any "multiple choice" questions, do so here. It can also be about anything you'd like to tell or ask relating in some way to this class! If you expect a reply, however, it's much better to email your professors.
