Teaching and Learning Physics weekly schedule

Week 5: 9/22 & 9/24: Simulations

Tues 9/22: No Class - Yom Kippur

If you'd like to meet to discuss your project, or any part of class, with Professor Dancy please make an appointment.
Also see email from Greg H (send to your colorado account) about an informal gathering.

Thurs 9/24 (class notes ): PhET & Iteractive Simulations.

Dynamics & Forces & N3

Read Knight Five Easy Lesson page 106-118 (on NB).

PhET: Browse the site https://phet.colorado.edu/

1) Watch the video titled "A Brief Introduction to Phet" under the teaching resources > tips for using PhET link.
https://phet.colorado.edu/en/teaching-resources/tipsForUsingPhet

2) Watch the video titled "Research and Development" found under the "about PhET" link.
https://phet.colorado.edu/en/about

3) Pick 2 physics related simulations to explore.
a) For each of the 2 simulations you pick look under the "for teachers" tab on the page for the simulation. Skim the support resources available for your simulation.
b) Write a 1-2 paragraph summary describing each simulation and the support resources you found. Submit these in the reading summary drop-box.

Grads: Finkelstein et al, When learning about the real world is better done virtually: A study of substituting computer simulations for laboratory equipment, PRST-PER (2005). [not originally stated, but reading summary pls]

Make sure you've taken the surveys and Submitted a Final Project Proposal

1) Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey(we'll be discussing this in future weeks)
2) a Belonging Survey that is part of our CU' Program here.

Surveys like these are crucial tools in improving the way we teach physics and treat students. Participating in the surveys is optional, but be sure to enter your identikey if you opt out so that we can provide credit.

Final Project:

Review guides and goals for Final Project.

On D2L, submit a short (2-5 sentence) description of what you migth pursue for a final proejct. This is non-binding but an option to explore.
