Norm Augustine on
"Competing in the New World Order: The Growing Importance of Science and Engineering"
Sept. 23, 7 p.m.

CU-Boulder's Vice Chancellor for Research Stein Sture cordially invites you to attend a lecture by the esteemed Norm Augustine on "Competing in the New World Order: The Growing Importance of Science and Engineering," Tuesday, September 23, 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the Cristol Chemistry Building, Room 142 at the University of Colorado at Boulder campus. Cristol Chemistry is located directly to the north of the University Memorial Center (UMC) on Euclid, near Broadway.

Augustine, the retired chairman and chief executive officer of the Lockheed Martin Corporation, chaired the National Academy of Sciences panel who issued the report Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future in 2006 stating that America is in substantial danger of losing its economic leadership position and suffering a concomitant decline in the standard of living and safety of its citizens because of a looming inability to compete in the global marketplace. It issued a call for Congress to increase funding for basic scientific research and to improve math and science education, for as Augustine has said "only by providing leading-edge human capital and knowledge capital can America continue to maintain a high standard of living-including providing national security-for its citizens."

In 2006, the National Academy of Sciences presented Mr. Augustine with its most prestigious award, the Public Welfare Medal, to honor his contributions to the vitality of science in the United States by bringing to industry and government a better understanding of the crucial role that fundamental scientific research must play in our long-term security and economic prosperity.

Much has happened in the two years since the Gathering Storm report was issued, and in his lecture Augustine will bring us up to date on the numerous steps that have been taken at the local, regional, and national level in response to the report as well as the continuing and speedy development and progress of our competitors. He will address such questions as:

§ Can America compete in the new world order?

§ How well, or how poorly, are we doing?

§ What are the factors in the "competitiveness equation"? and

§ What are America's most urgent next steps?

The lecture is free and open to the public. Please extend this invitation to colleagues, students, or other parties who may find Norm Augustine's lecture of interest.
