Reading assignments in Giancoli

- tentative, check frequently for changes -

Week 1 (Jan 12-16): CHARGES and COULOMB'S LAW: Giancoli Chapter 16.1-16.6 this week. (Also, see the "lecture notes link", always available on the left of this page, read notes 16.1-16.17 this week)

Week 2 (Jan 19-23): ELECTRIC FIELDS: Rest of Chapter 16 this week (we will skip 16.10, and 16.11-12 are just for fun, but interesting, check them out!) (In my lecture notes, rest of Ch. 16 notes)

Week 3 (Jan 26-30): VOLTAGE: Chapter 17 this week and next. (We will skip 17-6, and 17.10-11 are just for fun, but again highly recommended. We'll talk about the material in 17.10-11 in class, I don't expect you to memorize terms, but to have a qualitative understanding of the physics of these devices)

Week 4 (Feb 2-6): Exam 1. CAPACITORS : Finishing Chapter 17

Week 5 (Feb 9-13): CURRENT AND RESISTORS. Chapter 18 this week. (We will skip 18.8, and 18.9-10 will be just for fun, but highly recommended.)

Week 6 (Feb 16-20): CIRCUITS. Chapter 19 this week. (We will skip 19.5 and 19.6, but we will cover 19.7 and 19.8 )

Week 7 (Feb 23-27): CIRCUITS AND KIRCHOFF'S LAWS. Chapter 19 - finishing this up. (We'll just get started on Magnets at the very end of this week)

Week 8 (Mar 2-6): MAGNETS and MAGNETIC FIELDS. EXAM 2 this week. Chapter 20 (we'll get through much of it this week. We're skipping 20.8)

Week 9 (Mar 9-13): MAGNETIC MATERIALS and FARADAY'S LAW. We'll finish Ch 20, and start on Ch 21 at the end of the week .

Week 10 (Mar 16-20): FARADAY'S LAW. Ch. 21, up to (and including) 21.8 (We'll skip "Back EMF")

Week 11 (Mar 23-27): Spring Break

Week 12 (Mar 30 - Apr 3): MAXWELL'S EQUATIONS and EM WAVES. Chapter 22, just 22.1-3 and 22.7

Week 13 (Apr 6-10): Exam 3! This week we start Chapter 23. We will skip 23.3.
(And later, we will skip 23.10) But for this week, it's 23.1-2, and 23.4-6

Week 14 (Apr 13-17): Chapter 23, focusing (pardon the pun) on 23.7-8, and also 25.2-3. (but really, these are just more examples of lenses, I won't be pushing hard on any of the technical details here, just understanding basic ray diagrams!) Read 1,4&5 for fun, if you find it interesting (it's just yet more examples of the same stuff).

Week 15 (Apr 20-24): Starting Chapter 24 this week. (For exam-testable material, concentrate on 24.3-24.7)

Week 16 (Apr 27 - May 1):24.-8, and 24.10 will likely take us to the end of the term? Or maybe we'll talk about other interesting topics - we'll see..
