Week 1 (Aug 22-26): Welcome to Phys 3320, Quantum I
We begin with the central idea of quantum states for spin-1/2 objects (like electrons). We're starting in McIntyre's text Chapter 1. (Enjoy some fun quotes about Quantum Mechanics to get started...)
Announcements:
Our class is in Phys G125. We'll use iclickers in class this term. Register and bring it every day!
NOTE: Every Friday after class (3-3:50) is an optional Tutorial (in G2B60). You are welcome to attend, whether or not you register for it.
- Preflights will always be due Monday mornings at Noon. I'll post them here (front page) and in the calendar tab, on Fridays.
The first one is already available (password is 3220, all term!) and due the first day of classes! Since that's so early, this one is pure extra credit, totally optional. (But, if you have time, please fill it out, I'm interested in your responses.)
- Exams: Our midterms will be Thursday, Sep 22 and Wed Nov 2, from 7:30 to 9:15 PM.
If you can't make those, contact me ASAP (Steven.Pollock at Colorado.edu, deadline Tues Aug 30!) - Reading: We're starting McIntyre's Quantum Mechanics book Ch 1 (read his "prologue" page before the first class!)
For further reading, see the "Calendar" tab (also, "Lecture & Clickers") at the top of this page.
- Homework: See the "Calendar & Homework" tab! (Always due Friday at start of class)
Homework #1 is due Fri, Aug 26. (This hw is meant to be mostly math and Phys 2170 review, and is due the first week.)
- Feeling stuck or confused? Visit our piazza page and ask a question. Or answer someone else's for a little extra credit.
- We also have a D2L page where I post solutions, and occasionally update individual grade information.)
- Office Hours (tentative): Wed 5-6 PM (11th floor Reading room. If not well-attended, it may get canceled, let's see)
Thursday 4-6 PM (11th floor reading room) Staffed by Prof. Pollock and/or Gabriel, our LA
CONTACT SJP if you cannot make any of these hours, we'll see what we can do
The physics dep't is holding a welcome event Wed (Demos 5-5:30, ice cream 5:30-7 PM :-). Although it is oriented towards new students, all physics/Eng physics/APS majors are invited. It would be great for you to help welcome and support incoming (potential) majors too (and score some ice cream.)
