On the left, an image which I think David was referring to in class. See here for more details (and a short video clip). No one was hurt, Gauss' law (and the "Faraday cage effect") in action! Still, I'm thinking the pilots and control tower must have been a little disconcerted. (Thanks to Erin for sending this)

On the right, in honor of the subject of Chapter 3, the Laplace Equation, we have a portrait of Pierre Simon Laplace. You can get pictures of many mathematicians and scientists at the Dibner Portrait site.


Week 6 (Feb 18-Feb 22):

We are working through Ch.3, in which we are learning methods to solve Laplace's equation (Del^2 V=0).
