Week 2: 9/1 & 9/3: Constructivism and Peer Instruction.

Tues 9/1: (class notes to be posted here): Introduction to theory: Constructivism

1) Redish (TP): Chap 2: : pp 17- 31 and 40-43(half way through page 43); [and Redish Redish (TP) Chap 1 if you haven't read it yet] [reading summary]

2) Posner, et al: Accomodation of Scientific Conception...[reading summary]
undergrads: read first 4 pp and then skim
grads read all

3) diSessa, Changing Minds Chapter 5 [reading summary]

Grads 1): DiSessa, Coherence versus fragmentation Introduction (pp1-7)required; Skim or Optional rest

Grads 2) definitelyoptional but *the classic*: Toward an Epistemology of Physics

Each week you are expected to write a paragraph summary of each paper/ reading, and to list out 3 questions, or points of interest that the paper/reading brought up. 

Please post your bullet points/questions/responsess to othersonline on the paper at NB- Monday / Wed 5p.
By Tues noon please respond to one other student point / quesetiuons.- Tuesday / Thurs noon.

Also, each week you are expected to write a paragraph summary of each paper/ reading, and to list out 3 questions, or points of interest that the paper brought up. These can be the same as posted on NB if helpful. . Bring these to class in hardcopy. (So that means, this week, ~3 - 5 paragraphs (one for each reading) and ~9-15 questions (3 for each reading)

Familiarize yourself with Kinematics & 1-D Vectors (/e/g:Knight or Dubson: Chap 2& beginning of 3);

Read Knight Five Easy Lesson page 71-80 (on NB). [reading summary]

Mazur:Peer Instruction: Engaging Students One-on-One, All At Once [reading summary]

  • undergrads: pg 1-22, then skim 22-end
  • Grads: read all

Redish TP: 124-34 [reading summary]

FIELDWORK:
Make a (preliminary) decision
about your fieldwork for the semester. I'd like you to get started ASAP - if you plan on working in the Tutorials (recommended) you need to attend their weekly preparation meetings, which are going on this week. (If you're working somewhere else, we may need to make arrangements. Talk to me or email with any questions!). You will be asked to sign-up in class
