Welcome back!
- FCQ's (your end-of-term "faculty course evaluations") are done online, starting Monday Nov 30.
These are important to us, to the department, and to future students, please take the time to fill it out ASAP!
Here is some further information from CU in case you don't get an email request on Monday:
Please let your students know they will get an email from FCQ.Office@Colorado.EDU, and that it is *not* spam!
If they do not get our email:
1) Students should check their email account's spam folder for their online FCQ invitation, and/or
2) If students forward their campus email to another email account (e.g., gmail.com), they should check that email account's inbox and spam folder for their online FCQ invitation, and/or
3) Students can go to https://fcq.colorado.edu/ucb_fcq.htm and follow the directions there to submit their online FCQ.
Online collection will end Fri, Dec 11, at 11:59 pm. Students who do not respond by Thu, Dec 3, will receive at least one reminder email.
- Solutions to Exam 3 on D2L were posted right after the exam. Grades were posted on D2L the next day.
Histogram information available on our usual Course Info -> Exam Info link above.
See D2L for your score. (You'll get the exam back in Tutorial after the break,as usual.)
- Coming up: After the break we will wrap up Section 15.1-15.3, and then Wed we will return to Ch 14, which will likely take us through most of the rest of the semester! If time, we'll touch on "heat" at the very end, we'll see...
There is always a MP homework due every Tues evening (except T-giving week of course) and Tutorial homework (ditto). (We are all done with prelecture videos, though)
- If D2L is showing that you have a zero for clicker points, please register your iclicker. Ask your instructor if you have questions. (You need to use your identikey, not your 9-digit ID, when you register)
Thanksgiving week:
Enjoy your Thanksgiving break!
Eat, rest, relax, re-energize. (After you return, we still have 13% of the semester left to go! Stay psyched! :-)
- Solutions to Exam 3 on D2L are now posted.
Histogram information available on our Course Info -> Exam Info link above. Average score was 69% on Exam 3, median was 72% (Half scored above that, half below)
See D2L for your score. (You'll get the exam back in Tutorial after the break,as usual.)
- Coming up: we will temporarily SKIP Ch 14, starting on Ch 15 (fluids) on Friday. (We cover 15.1-15.3 only) After the break we will wrap up 15.3, and then we will return to Ch 14, which will likely take us through the semester! But if time, we'll touch on "heat" at the very end, we'll see...
There is always a MP homework due every Tues evening (except T-giving week of course) and Tutorial homework (ditto).

Announcements for week #13: (Nov 16- Nov 20)
- We will have an exam review day on Wed, (exam is Thursday). Coming up: we will temporarily SKIP over Ch 14, starting on Ch 15 (fluids) on Friday. After the break we will cover Ch 15, and then we will return to Ch 14, which will likely wrap up the semester! (If time, we'll touch on "heat" at the very end, we'll see)
I checked clicker attendance for the last exam review day (Wed before exam 2.) Interestingly, people who skipped or missed that day scored on average over 9 points lower on the midterm the next day - a full letter grade! (Huh... wonder if that means anything?)
There is always the usual MP homework (Tues evening) and Tutorial homework
- Exam #3 is this Thursday, Nov 19. See our exam info page (always available under the course info tab above). (Location info has not changed, that page is here.)
- There is a MP prelecture video due MONDAY Nov 16 at 8 AM. Careful, you'll need to do that over the weekend, it's not due at the usual (Wed) time! There is also the usual MP homework (Tues evening) and Tutorial homework, as always.
- If D2L is showing that you have a zero for clicker points, please register your iclicker. Ask your instructor if you have questions. (You need to use your identikey, not your 9-digit ID, when you register)

Announcements for week #12: (Nov 9- Nov 13)
- The next MP prelecture video is due MONDAY Nov 16 at 8 AM. Careful, you'll need to do that over the weekend, it's not due at the usual (Wed) time! There is also the usual MP homework (Tues evening) and Tutorial homework, as always.
- Here's a slow motion iphone clip of the "dropping the two spools" demo from the last Tutorial. The spool on the left is "loose" and unwinding, the string then goes up and over a (low mass, low friction) pulley and returns down to a "fixed" spool on the right, which cannot rotate. We asked you to predict which spool hits the ground first - the one that is fixed to the string, or the one that unwinds? The answer is surprising to many people (me too, until I drew a Free body diagram, and realized that the tension is the same on both sides, and so is the weight...) If you were a little unclear about what the result was that you saw in recitation (or if you missed it), please check out this video!
- Want to explore teaching as a career? Spring 2016 you can take a 1 credit course called Step 1: Educ 2020. (Real experience teaching elementary age kids. See www.colorado.edu/cuteach for more information.)

Announcements for week #11: (Nov 2- Nov 6)
- Next Mastering Physics prelecture video (#7) is due on Monday, Nov 2 at 8am. That's a MONDAY, so you'll need to do it over this coming weekend. It's on "Moment of inertia".

- Tuesday is election day - if you are a registered voter, don't forget to vote! Never mind any partisan politics: in my opinion the more scientifically literate voters who participate, the better. Let's allow logic and evidence-based reasoning help us make rational decisions as best we can :-)

Announcements for week #10: (Oct 26- Oct 30)
- Next Mastering Physics prelecture video (#7) is due on Monday, Nov 2 at 8am. That's a MONDAY, so you'll need to do it over this coming weekend. It's on "Moment of inertia".
- Regarding the previous Mastering Physics prelecture video which was due on Wed, Oct. 28 at 8am. There was a glitch (my fault, sorry!!) which removed the credit from everyone who did it early. If that happened to you, all is good - we have given FULL CREDIT to you (even if you lost credit, or redid it and got a lower score, or whatever!) But of course - the whole point of these things is not the credit, it's the learning! So, if you haven't done it yet, please do still watch that little video (you can always watch prelecture videos after the due date) It's short, and the questions that go with it are good, some of them require some thinking! Again, my apologies for the techno-fault, hope it did not cause anyone undue stress.
- Here is a nice link about Center of Mass (explaining the "Fosbury flop" move in high-jumping in terms of basic physics.)
- Histogram of Exam 2 results. Exam 2 scores (and solutions) have been posted on D2L. (Some advice is available here if you did not do as well as you would like. See the "Resources" tab above for more.)

- Hint/clarification for MP Homework 3 question #10: When MP says "Find an expression for the time t > 0 when the particle is moving in the x-direction." they mean it literally: "moving in the x-direction" means it is moving in the PURE x-direction, (i.e, find the time after t=0 when you are moving in the pure i-hat direction, with no j-hat component!) See also the hint in MP, and the piazza discussion for more help!
- Prelecture videos: Mastering Physics prelecture video #4 (Newton's 3rd law) due Tues (Sep 15)@midnight. Read the little comment in it - there is a second video available (on Newton's 1st law) which is good, but not required (it's not extra credit, just watch it if you want) It may have a glitch - after the first "concept test break", you may need to use the little timer slider to slide PAST that concept test to keep watching.
Usual Homeworks: Mastering Physics Homeworks are due every Tues night (like clockwork, no exceptions). Tutorial homework is always due in recitation, see our Tutorial Homework link ("Homework" tab above) for details. We won't keep reminding you about these "regular" assignments - that'll always be the same.
