Recitation Guide
Recitation Goals
- To develop skills in argument, justification and reasoning
- To support the concepts developed in the lectures and homework sets
- To explore creatively the fundamental principles of physics and their consequences
- To have fun -- yes! -- fun
Recitations
- Recitations meet every week. During the recitation session, you will work in groups on problems that will further your understanding of the current material.
- There will be plenty of time in recitations for discussion and question-answer sessions. The recitation is your time to initiate discussions or explanations of topics or problems.
Expectations
- Bring your Tutorial book with you every week
- Complete your previous week's homework and turn it in upon entering.
- Show up on time, and stay through the full period. Don't rush through these things! If your group is really fast, do one of two things - either circulate to other groups to help them (that doesn't mean telling them answers, it means helping them learn!) Or, you can also work on you Tutorial (or Mastering) homework.
- Work collaboratively - don't try to do these on your own. A lot of the value of Tutorials is hearing other people's different ways of thinking, constructively evaluating those, and trying to formulate your own ideas in ways that your group-partners can understand. The best way to learn is to teach and discuss it!
- Everyone is to do the Tutorial homework on your own. You are welcome to discuss with others, but in the end, your work and understand should be your own, in your own words.
- Be creative and thorough, and have fun.
Tutorial Grading
- Your overall Tutorial grade will count for 15% of your course grade. Part of this is "participation" (you get full credit for showing up and working productively on the Tutorial, not just for showing up!) The rest is the score on the written homework that your TA will grade. These scores will show up in D2L.
Makeups
- We will automatically excuse one missed Tutorial week. Tutorials are an important part of the class, so we recognize that missing one can be a problem when it comes to exam time. If you wish to visit another section, check with your TA and see if there is a space for you. (Alas, we are very crowded, so you cannot just show up for any section that is convenient) You can always work on the Tutorial on your own time and meet up with your TA during their office hours to get help/checked out, but this cannot be used to get credit for a missed week.
