Physics 3310, Electromagnetism
Instructor: Steven Pollock
We talked about electric fields in and around conductors last week (the "Faraday cage" effect). Here's another example. See here for more details (and a short video clip). No one was hurt, Gauss' law in action (E=0 INSIDE the metal plane)! Still, I'm thinking the pilots and control tower must have been a little disconcerted.
On the right,
in honor of the subject of Chapter 3, the Laplace Equation, we have a portrait of Pierre Simon
Laplace. You can get pictures of many mathematicians and scientists at the Dibner Portrait site.
Week 5 (Feb 11 -Feb 15):
Wraping up Ch 2, and starting Ch.3, in which we will learn methods to solve Laplace's equation (Del^2 V=0).
Special notes:
- There is a Preflight #5 (Password is always 3310) due MONDAY at noon!
- Next homework is HW 6 (due start of class Wed Feb 20) You can always find homeworks in the "calendar" link (upper left), if you want to get started a little early on the next one.
Next homework is HW 5 (due start of class Wed Feb 13)
- Please visit our piazza site. Some of you are starting to post questions (and responses) there, thanks! (The more who do that, the more useful it becomes to the rest of us.)
- Do you know about "Beyond Boulder"? It's every Thursday, 5 PM (11th floor, with pizza!) It's for undergrads (Astro and physics), designed to focus on what comes after graduation (tips, career ideas, research opportunities, etc). Every week is different. This week is on "Careers", with outside guest speakers. See http://beyondboulder.pbworks.com for details each week.
- Video lectures:here.
- Check out these links for simulations to show vector fields in 2D electrostatics, or 3D , or another (emstatic) in 2D.
- Society of Physics students has pizza and socializing on the 11th floor of the tower Wed at 5 PM all this term. Check it out!
- Office hours Monday and Tuesday, 4-6 (ish), in our classroom space
- We have a D2L (learn.colorado.edu) site - I post homework solutions there (and also at Piazza)
OLDER Webpages, for reference and old links: Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4,
I welcome your comments on the class and this website.
