Week 7 (Oct 6-Oct 10): We are moving to Griffiths Ch 8 now, learning about electromagnetic conservation laws (charge, energy, momentum, and angular momentum)

John Henry Poynting
The physical laws which govern electrodynamics can be used to derive energy, momentum and angular momentum densities in terms of the fields. These can be used to find the form of conservation laws when these fields are present. A key concept in this development is Poynting's vector, named for John Henry Poynting, shown above.

Announcements:

  • First midterm is graded. (See our D2L page where I post solutions. I have just updated your individual grade information there. I'll hand back exams on Monday) See the bottom of the exam info link for the histogram and some comments. It was a harder test than I anticipated. That happens sometimes!
  • Remember, due every Mon by 10 AM! (Preflight #7) due Monday, 10 AM) Password always 3320)
  • Homework #6 due Wed, Oct 8 (at start of class)
Homework #7 due Wed, Oct 15 (at start of class. Free automatic extension to Friday Oct 17 (start of class) due to QM test...)
  • Reading: We will largely be skimming Griffiths 8.2 ( And you won't be responsible for the "Stress tensor" on exams or homeworks)
  • Visit our piazza page and ask a question. Or answer someone else's for a little extra credit!

  • Beyond Boulder meets Mondays@ 5 PM. (CU' meets Tuesdays@5 PM every other week)
