Week 9 (Oct 20-Oct 24): We are working through Griffiths Ch 9: EM waves in matter.

rainbows
This week we study EM waves propagating in matter. When waves travel across a boundary between two different materials some of the wave bounces back and part is transmitted. These processes of reflection and refraction have many applications beyond making pretty rainbows, we are engaged in the fundamental derivation of much of optics from Maxwell's equations. (The picture above is especially nice because it shows both the primary and secondary rainbows.)

Announcements:

  • Preflight #8: Due Mon @ 10 AM. (coming soon)
  • Homework 8 due on Wed. (Oct 22) (Note: there was a small typo in Q1. At the end of Q1a, it said "from the case at yt=0", but it should just be "from the case at y=0")
  • Reading: We're in Ch 9 (and will cover everything up through 9.4.2)
  • Visit our piazza page and ask a question. Or answer someone else's for a little extra credit!
